The Venice Carnival is a one-of-a-kind event where history, culture, and elegance come together to create an unforgettable experience. Its iconic masks symbolize mystery and sophistication, captivating visitors for centuries and making this carnival unlike any other. There is no better way to discover this unique city, known since the sixteenth century as "La Serenissima"—the official title of the Republic of Venice. For centuries, Venice was one of the most powerful maritime states in the Mediterranean, and the term "Serenissima" embodied the grandeur, stability, and glory of the city and its governance.
Among the most famous traditional masks is the Bàuta; consisting of a mask covering the full face. Worn by both men and women, the Bàuta ensured complete anonymity, granting a level of freedom that only the Carnival could provide. Another well-known mask is the Plague Doctor, distinguished by its long beaked nose. Originally a medical device used during epidemics. Finally, The Moretta, is an oval black velvet mask that was particularly popular among women. Without an opening for the mouth, it was held in place by biting a small internal button, adding an air of mystery and silence to the wearer.
